Veteran Crisis Support

We know that veterans can face a range of unique and challenging situations due to their service and service related conditions, and that very often, finding help is a major problem preventing a veteran or family getting the help and support they need to overcome those challenging circumstances they face.

At Veteran Financial Connect, we are expanding to help support veterans and their family during a crisis that they can come to, as well as being a point of referral for those who support veterans including wellbeing officers and other support from RSL's etc.

Our veteran crisis support helps veterans, family members and Defence members access support via the DVA Acute Support program to cover things such as:

  • Pre-Bereavement support - Supporting veterans and their family when a veteran is given a terminal diagnosis, to help them ensure that their financial matters are sorted prior to their passing, to ensure a somewhat smooth transition for their family and to help provide and support for their family post their passing.

The aim of this is to help address a major shortfall in supporting veterans and their family to navigate these matters during a stressful and emotional time, to                 minimise and reduce the stress on their family, and is something we can support and guide veterans through the process with, and connect to wider                                 supports such as RSL and Legacy.

  • Financial Literacy - we can support a veteran with financial literacy and budgeting help with regards to helping build a veterans capacity to manage new and challenging life situations

  • Rental crisis - When a veteran is at risk of eviction or rental stress due to arrears, we can assist with negotiating potential payment arrangements on behalf of a veteran, to try and stabilise their housing situation.  Note: the sooner a veteran reaches out to us regarding this, then potentially the better the opportunity to negotiate an outcome.

  • Banking Support for Relationship Breakdowns - support in times of family violence or family breakdowns to organise new bank accounts etc. when needed and

  • Services to build capacity including financial literacy and debt negotiations via a financial counsellor

As like everything with DVA, there may be requirements that need to be met to obtain the necessary support package, and this is something we can discuss with a veteran, family or other wellbeing representative.

Veteran Financial Connect especially focuses on supporting veterans and their family pre-bereavement, as there is a huge gap of knowledge and support in this space, and we want veterans to engage with us once they have a terminal diagnosis so that we can step them through everything that needs to be done, including potential early release of superannuation death benefits to ensure the future financial security for their family.

While we know it is a topic none of us like talking about, it is sadly a very necessary topic.
